Raccoon Valley

A woman walks around while the world goes to shit.

Think of this movie like “Hush\ A Quiet Place\ Bird Box” meets literally any zombie movie. While definitively not ground-breaking, it’s worth a rainy day watch.

Devil

A group of people use an elevator.

The film is rather kitschy, but despite that, I enjoyed it. It’s nice to see films where the acting environments are limited as the story REALLY depends upon good/decent acting.. I’d say give it a watch.

The Babadook

A troubled family encounters a book which harbors an entity.

For the most part, “The Babadook” is a solid story.

The film features loss, depression, anxiety and even an evil presence.  Overall, this kinda puts me in an evil-ish “Home Alone”.    Not bad for a 1-timer.

Ouija

“Ouija” is the story of five high-school friends searching for answers about the apparent suicide of their friend, Debbie. With the assistance of the Parker Brothers classic, they set out to request answers from their dearly departed. Who they contact however, is someone far from helpful.

This movie has everything:  Attics, basements, moving objects, and even a Hispanic maid who seems to know way too much!

The film is slow, rather dark, and relies heavily on shadow-play to build tension and suspense.  It does this to dubious effect, but there are a few nice scenes in which the filmmaker attempts to display contrast.  It has a twist, albeit an obvious one and I found myself playing on my phone through most of it.  This movie may prove thrilling to some children, but not to anyone else. Not worth the time.

Haunt

A family moves into a house that has a troubling past.

“Haunt” has a few jump scares and is pretty slow and meh throughout, but the film does have its redeeming qualities and a few scenes are creepy. If you’re pressed for a film, it’s worth a one-time watch.

We Summon the Darkness

A group of concert goers discover after-party excitement in the midst of satanic slayings.

This was a fun film. I wasn’t expecting much, but did find myself laughing at more than a few scenes. A decent party movie to be sure.

Snowpiercer

Surrounded by a dystopian future, the poor and desperate seek to better their station.

The film takes place on a train with the have-nots at the tail and the haves towards the front.  While not really a horror movie, thematically it approaches the genre. In short, this film classically illustrates Conflict Theory. Worth a watch.
