At the Devil’s Door

Possession movies are nothing new and “At the Devil’s Door” is no exception.  In this tiresome film, the Devil is on the loose looking to make a baby and later a mother.  Like Zeus, the Devil appears to be the love’em and leave’em type. What I’ve learned from watching this movie:

Possessed girls make terrible baby-sitters, The Devil does not like family photos, and the going rate for soul’s in the 80’s was $500.

I just saved you 91 minutes of your life. Skip it.

The Thing

A group of researchers stumble upon something buried deep in the Antarctic.

I find that the old-school special effects enhance the scary in creature films. This classic is definitely worth a viewing.

The Lord of Tears

An Irish teacher inherits a house from his mother that harbors a secret.

“The Lord of Tears” is the story of a man plagued by the multiple estates his mother leaves him and oh, also by an Owlman.  That’s right. Honestly this was a confusing film. There was however an Epic Mustache Man though.  Throughout the film, scenes would flash to EMM doing various things like: holding marbles, sharpening an axe, and taking baths.  Let that sink in. Also, the 5 minute dancing scene is something to behold.

I didn’t really care for “The Lord of Tears”, but I can’t help but feel that I missed some deeper meaning.  Watch it and wonder as well.

Temple

Three adventure seekers find trouble in the mountains of Japan.

This is one of those movies where multiple warnings are ignored and people are left wondering, “why is this happening?” You’ve probably have already seen this movie under a different title and cast. It is formulaic and not worth the time.

As Above, So Below

A driven scientist and her team set out for the catacombs of Paris to find an object of unspeakable value, but what else will they find amid the bones?

This was a nice little adventure story with an interesting, mythological wrapper.  Not bad for a found footage movie.  Contains some jump scares, but has really interesting scenes. It is worth watching once at least.

Creep

A freelance cameraman accepts an assignment with a very odd character.

“Creep” is not the classical horror with ghouls, ghosts, and goblins, but it does establish the horror possible within us. As its name suggests, “Creep” will fill you with general unease as you follow this story to completion. Watch it.

Paranormal Activity

A young couple encounters an unexpected visitor in their new house.

I saw this one in theaters and liked it. It is a “found footage” movie that follows a couple in their experiences in discovering what is happening. Some of the scenes are a bit boring, but it is worth it for the scenes that aren’t. Watch.

Apollo 18

Astronauts visit the moon only to learn something was already there.

“Apollo 18”, another found footage move, would be a good introduction to people getting into the horror genre. Nothing is in your face, but it does deliver a few fun scenes and begs the question, why haven’t we been back to the moon? Watch.

The Sacrament

A film crew investigates a community in a secret location.

This film copies much of the real-life, the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, better known as Jonestown led by Jim Jones.

Found Footage movie. Not too bad considering how crazy people can become.

Don’t be Afraid of the Dark

An architect buys a mansion to refurbish, but some things are better left undiscovered.

This is a decent film with good atmosphere and a brood of charming little critters. A good first film for those new to horror and a decent palate cleanser for those who aren’t. Good for a watch.
